Personal Statement

I was awarded my Specialist Teacher’s Diploma in teaching learner’s with Dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties in September 2016. I studied at the Helen Arkell centre.https://www.helenarkell.org.uk/

I am committed to teaching children with Dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties, using their strengths and interests in order that they may reach their full potential.

I have 19 years’ experience of supporting and working with children in a mainstream school and 11 years’ experience of working with children and teenagers in a swim teaching/coaching capacity.

I am able to devise and execute suitable strategies for learners that I am working with, using ongoing assessment to monitor achievements. I have proficiently managed and implemented many intervention groups, these include phonics, handwriting, reciprocal reading and maths.

My experience working with children as a teaching/learning support assistant and a teacher/swimming coach has provided me with the ability to understand the many different ways that children learn, the ability to reflect quickly and how to give motivating, positive feedback.

As a parent of dyslexic children I can empathise with parents, and understand their frustration at feeling like they are not able to support their child as they would like to. I also understand the difficulties that occur when trying to get support from educational establishments, when there are generally insufficient funds and time available to support children with Specific Learning Difficulties.
